Working with HDR

Mnemonica Screening Rooms can host HDR10 files. HDR10 files playback is only available through our mobile app on compatible devices and via Airplay 2 on HDR smart-TVs.

Supported formats

To screen HDR content, users must upload streaming-ready H.265 HEVC HDR proxies. Mnemonica analyzes the metadata of the uploaded file (via MediaInfo) to determine its HDR nature or not. An HDR badge displays on the clip in the Screening Room when an HDR file is recognized, and Mnemonica automatically encodes a toned-mapped 8 bits H.264 version to screen on non-HDR displays. The HDR file is saved as an "original" even if the Keep Originals setting is disabled.

To be recognized as HDR, a file must be:

HEVC H.265 10 bits
Maximum overall bitrate: 10 Mbps

and have embedded the following tag:

Transfer characteristics: PQ

The files must meet all of the above attributes, or Mnemonica will only store the H.264 encoded proxy. No external metadata files are required. On top of that, when encoding the HDR files, we suggest enabling the tag "Is Streamable" (internet-ready).

Resolutions and bitrates

HEVC H.265 codec is 40% to 60% more efficient than H.264. This means that the H.265 file is much lighter for the same resolution and quality than H.264. Plus, the bigger is the format, the more efficient the codec is. Nonetheless, 10-bit Vs. 8-bit codec implies 25% more information to store.

As Mnemonica doesn't re-encode HDR recognized files, to keep a smooth streaming experience, we suggest uploading files following these bitrate rules.

Playing back an HDR file

To playback an HDR file, users need to install Mnemonica Mobile App on an HDR-compatible device. Playback on the computer browser is not supported.

Airplay 2

Through the iOS version of our mobile app, users can screen HDR content via Airplay 2 on Apple TV 4k and supported smart-TVs.

To playback over Airplay 2:

Open the player on our mobile app
Tap on the Airplay icon above the player canvas
Select a device from the list
Enjoy the content on the external screen and use the app to control the player
