A KDM (Key Delivery Message) unlocks an encrypted DCP on a specific projector for a specific time window. This guide is for Operators, Power Guests and Guests. Operators and Power Guests request a KDM, and a Manager approves it. Guests download the KDMs that someone sends them. If you are a Manager, read Deliver a KDM.

Before you start

Your role in the Archive Project sets what you can do. Roles are set for each Project, so you can have a different role in another Project. To check your role, see Roles.

If you are a Guest, you do not see the KDM module until someone sends you a KDM delivery. Go to Download a KDM sent to you.

If you are an Operator or a Power Guest, make sure that these conditions are true before you request a KDM:

  1. The DCP is encrypted, and its DKDM is uploaded. Without a DKDM, the CPL does not appear in the wizard. Only a Manager can upload a DKDM: ask a Manager of the Project.
  2. You have the certificate of each target projector. A certificate is a DCI/SMPTE X.509 file (.pem) that the cinema gives you. You can register it before you start, or during the wizard.
  3. You know the recipient email. Mnemonica sends the KDM to this address after the approval.

Open the KDM module

From the Mnemonica main dashboard, click KDMs in the bottom navigation bar. The module has three tabs:

TabContent
ActiveCurrent deliveries: pending and approved
HistoryCompleted and rejected deliveries
DevicesYour registered projector certificates

Register a projector certificate

Open the Devices tab and click the add button (+) in the toolbar. The menu has two options:

  • Upload Certificate: add a .pem file that the cinema sent you.
  • Browse Platform: import a certificate that is already registered on Mnemonica. Use this option when your organization manages certificates centrally.

Choose the option

Click Upload Certificate in the menu.

Name the device

Type a Device Name, for example "Main Theater Projector".

Add the file

Drop the .pem file into the upload area, or click the area to browse.

Upload

Click Upload.

Click a row to open the Inspector panel with all the certificate details. To rename, replace or remove a certificate, click the options button (⋮) on its row.

Request a KDM

On the Active tab, click Create new KDM delivery. The wizard title is "Request KDM", because a Manager must approve your request.

Select the Project

Select the Project that contains the content. Use the search bar to filter by name. Only Projects with encrypted DCPs appear.

Select the CPL

Select the CPL (Composition Playlist), the version of the content to unlock. Each CPL can have a different language, subtitle track or audio configuration. Its tags show resolution, frame rate, audio format and aspect ratio.

Select the certificates

Select each projector that receives the KDM. You can select many certificates for one request. If a projector is not registered, open Upload Certificate and add its .pem file there.

Set the validity

Select a preset: 24 Hours, 1 Week, 2 Weeks or 1 Month. Or type custom dates in Valid From and Valid Until.

The KDM works only in this time window. After the Valid Until time, the projector cannot play the content.

Type the recipient

Type the recipient email. This step shows the Manager who reviews your request. As a Power Guest, you can also type a message for that Manager.

Review and submit

Read the summary in Content, Configuration and Delivery. To change a value, click Edit in that section. Click Submit Request.

Your request shows on the Active tab with the Pending status. The Manager receives a notification.

If you close the wizard after you type data, Mnemonica asks you to confirm: "Discard changes? All progress in this wizard will be lost."

Follow your request

Mnemonica notifies you when the Manager makes a decision. The Status column on the Active tab shows the result:

ResultWhat it meansWhat to do
PendingThe Manager did not decide yet.Wait. If it takes too long, ask the Manager to check the notification.
The Manager requested changesThe Manager sent the request back with a message.Read the message. Edit the request and submit it again.
ApprovedMnemonica generated the KDM and notified the recipient.Download the KDM files if you need them.
RejectedThe request is closed permanently.Read the reason. To try again, create a new request.

To download the KDM files of an approved delivery, click the options button (⋮) on its row, then click Download.

Completed and rejected requests move to the History tab, a read-only archive.

Download a KDM sent to you

When someone sends you a KDM delivery, Mnemonica notifies you, and the KDM module becomes available to you.

Open the KDM module

From the Mnemonica main dashboard, click KDMs in the bottom navigation bar.

Find the delivery

On the Active tab, find the delivery by its CPL name. Type in the search bar to filter the list.

Download

Click the options button (⋮) on the delivery row. Click Download.

Give the KDM files to the cinema. Each file works only on the projector it was created for, and only in its validity window.

Troubleshooting

"No CPLs found" in the wizard. The DCP is not encrypted, or its DKDM is not uploaded. Ask a Manager of the Project to upload the DKDM.

"No certificates uploaded yet". Register a certificate on the Devices tab, or upload one in the certificates step of the wizard.

A certificate shows "Expired". You can select it, but its KDMs do not work on the projector. Ask the cinema for a new certificate.

The request stays "Pending". Only a Manager can approve it. Ask the Manager to check the notification.

There is no Download option. You can download a KDM only after a Manager approves it.

You do not see the KDMs button. As a Guest, you see the KDM module only after someone sends you a KDM delivery. Otherwise, ask a Manager of the Project to check your role in the Project.
