This article explains how to fix the connection error CERT_HAS_EXPIRED in Mnemonica Gate when you use a proxy server.

What to do

If the Gate shows CERT_HAS_EXPIRED when it connects to Mnemonica through a proxy server, the root certificate on your device has expired. This certificate guarantees the identity of Mnemonica.

Install it

With administrator credentials, double-click the downloaded file. This installs the certificate in the keychain of your system.

To prevent this error, keep your devices updated. The operating system renews root certificates when it updates.

Why this error occurs

Every HTTPS web domain has a digital certificate (SSL). The certificate proves who owns the domain and encrypts the traffic. Third parties, called Certificate Authorities (for example Let's Encrypt), issue these certificates.

Your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS) keeps a root certificate for each Certificate Authority. With this certificate, your device trusts all the domains that the authority signed. This applies to websites and to applications such as the Gate.

All certificates expire. When the certificate of a site expires, the owner must renew it. When a root certificate expires, the operating system stops trusting it. The sites that the authority signed then become unreachable, or the system shows them as threats.

Root certificates last 5, 10 or 15 years. The operating system renews them in its periodic updates. If nobody updates the operating system, you must update the expired root certificates yourself.
