Mnemonica Screening Rooms can host HDR10 files. HDR10 playback is only available through our mobile app on compatible devices, and via Airplay 2 on HDR smart TVs.

Supported formats

To screen HDR content, upload streaming-ready H.265 HEVC HDR proxies. Mnemonica reads the metadata of the uploaded file (with MediaInfo) to find out if the file is HDR.

When Mnemonica recognizes an HDR file, an HDR badge shows on the clip in the Screening Room. Mnemonica also automatically encodes a tone-mapped 8 bits H.264 version, to screen on non-HDR displays. Mnemonica saves the HDR file as an "original", even if the Keep Originals setting is disabled.

To be recognized as HDR, a file must have all these attributes:

  • HEVC H.265 10 bits.
  • Maximum overall bitrate: 10 Mbps.
  • The embedded tag Transfer characteristics: PQ.

If a file does not meet all these attributes, Mnemonica stores only the H.264 encoded proxy. You do not need external metadata files. When you encode HDR files, we suggest you enable the tag "Is Streamable" (internet-ready).

Resolutions and bitrates

The HEVC H.265 codec is 40% to 60% more efficient than H.264. For the same resolution and quality, the H.265 file is much lighter than the H.264 file. The bigger the format, the more efficient the codec. Nonetheless, a 10-bit codec needs 25% more information to store than an 8-bit codec.

Mnemonica does not re-encode files that it recognizes as HDR. To keep the streaming smooth, upload files that follow these bitrate rules.

Playing back an HDR file

To play back an HDR file, install the Mnemonica Mobile App on an HDR-compatible device. Computer browsers do not support HDR playback.

Airplay 2

With the iOS version of our mobile app, you can screen HDR content via Airplay 2 on Apple TV 4k and supported smart TVs.

To play back over Airplay 2:

Open the player

Open the player on the mobile app.

Tap the Airplay icon

Tap the Airplay icon above the player canvas.

Select the device

Select a device from the list.

The content plays on the external screen. Use the app to control the player.
