Passkey requirements

Passkeys require a minimum version of the operating system and of the browser.

A passkey replaces a password: you unlock it with your fingerprint, your face or your PIN, and it gives you a strong session. Your device can keep a passkey only if its operating system and its browser are recent enough. This article lists the minimum versions, so you can check your device before you start.

What a passkey needs

To create and use a passkey, your device needs all of these:

  • A supported operating system, at the minimum version in the table below.
  • A supported browser, at the minimum version in the table below.
  • A screen lock: a fingerprint, your face, a PIN or a device password. On Windows, this is Windows Hello.
  • A place to keep the passkey: iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, Windows Hello, a password manager such as 1Password or Bitwarden, or a security key.

Minimum versions

DeviceMinimum operating systemMinimum browserWhere the passkey is kept
MacmacOS 13 VenturaSafari 16, Chrome 108, Edge 108, Firefox 122iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager
Windows PCWindows 10 or Windows 11Chrome 108, Edge 108, Firefox 122Windows Hello or Google Password Manager
iPhone and iPadiOS and iPadOS 16Safari, Chrome, Edge or FirefoxiCloud Keychain
AndroidAndroid 9Chrome 108Google Password Manager
ChromebookChromeOS 129ChromeGoogle Password Manager
LinuxUbuntu or another desktop distributionChrome 129Google Password Manager

Later versions also work. To keep the passkey in Google Password Manager on a computer, use Chrome 129 or later. For the best result, keep the operating system and the browser up to date.

A password manager such as 1Password or Bitwarden can keep the passkey on every device in the table. On Linux, it is the way to use a passkey in Firefox. A security key works on every device that has a USB port or NFC.

On Windows, Windows Hello keeps the passkey only on that computer: it does not sync to your other devices. To use the same passkey on other devices, keep it in Google Password Manager or in a password manager. Microsoft stopped support for Windows 10 in October 2025. If you can, use Windows 11, version 22H2 or later.

Use the passkey of your phone on a computer

When you click Use passkey, the browser can offer to use a passkey from another device, for example an option to use a phone or tablet. The browser then shows a QR code that you scan with the camera of your phone.

This needs:

  • An iPhone or iPad with iOS 16, or an Android phone with Android 9.
  • Bluetooth turned on, on both the computer and the phone. The two devices must be near each other.
  • On a Windows PC, Windows 11, version 23H2 or later.

This QR code is not the QR code of the Mnemonica App tab on the sign-in page. The browser shows this one, and you scan it with the camera. You scan the other one with the Mnemonica app.

If your device is too old

If you cannot update the operating system or the browser, you can still get a strong session:

  • Use the Mnemonica app. On the sign-in page, click the Mnemonica App tab. Then scan the QR code with the app. The app needs iOS 15 or Android 7, not the versions in the table above. See Signing in to Mnemonica.
  • Use a security key. A FIDO2 security key, for example a YubiKey, keeps the passkey itself. Your computer needs a USB port or NFC for it.
