Lost device and reset

Lost the phone or computer that holds your strong method? Reset your strong methods, wait 24 hours and start again.

You lost your phone, or the computer with your passkey, and now you cannot open Strong Projects. If you have no strong device left, a reset clears every strong method from your account. After 24 hours, you add a new one and work as before.

Do you still have another strong device? For example, a computer with your passkey, or a second phone where biometrics is on in the Mnemonica app. Then you do not need a reset. Do these steps:

  1. Sign in with that device. Your session is strong.
  2. Open Preferences / Security. Remove the lost device. For a computer, delete its passkey in the Passkeys tab. For a phone, revoke its key in the API keys and devices tab.
  3. Use the strong device to add your new phone or computer. See Add a device.

Why a reset? Only a strong device that you have with you can approve a new one. A basic session cannot add a strong method while the account still has one. When all your strong devices are gone, the reset is the way out: it empties the account of strong methods, so you can start again.

What happens in a reset

  1. You sign in with an email link, Google or Apple.
  2. You request the reset in the Sessions and reset tab of the Security page.
  3. Mnemonica deletes all your passkeys, the keys of the Mnemonica app and your API keys. It also unlinks your Google and Apple accounts. You cannot cancel this.
  4. Mnemonica ends all your sessions, basic and strong, on every device and in every browser. The device where you started the reset gets a new basic session and stays signed in.
  5. At the same time, Mnemonica sends you a warning: an email to your account address, and a notification to every phone where biometrics is on in the Mnemonica app.
  6. For 24 hours, you work with basic sessions only. Strong Projects stay closed, and you cannot add a strong method.
  7. When the 24 hours end, add a new strong method. It works at once.

Until you connect Google or Apple again, you sign in with an email link only. You can connect them again at once, in the Connected accounts tab of Preferences / Security.

The tools that used your API keys stop working. Your Gates stop too, because the reset deletes their keys. Pairing a Gate needs a strong session, so wait 24 hours and add a strong method first. Then pair your Gates again.

You can do a reset once every 7 days at most.

Start a reset

Sign in with a basic method

Use an email link, Google or Apple, on the web or in the app.

Open the Security page

Open Preferences / Security. Select the Sessions and reset tab.

Reset your sign-in methods

Click Reset sign-in methods. Confirm.

Wait 24 hours

Until then, Mnemonica refuses any new strong method.

Then add your first one again: see Add your first strong method.

The old methods stop working on Mnemonica, but copies can stay on your devices:

The passkey stays on your device or in your password manager, because Mnemonica cannot delete it there. Delete it yourself.

If you did not ask for a reset

If you get a warning about a reset that you did not start, somebody may control your inbox or your Google or Apple account. The reset is already done, and you cannot cancel it.

Do these actions:

  1. Secure your mailbox, and your Google or Apple account.
  2. When the 24 hours end, add a new strong method at once. The first person who adds one becomes the strong user of the account.
  3. Create new API keys for the tools that need them. See API keys.
  4. If you need help, contact the support.
