This article gives you some basic advice to protect your accounts and your devices. Most of it applies to all your online accounts, not only to Mnemonica.

Protect your accounts

Cyber attacks are frequent, and many of them attack users who do not expect them. Every account that you have needs protection. Follow these rules:

  • Protect your inbox: Mnemonica has no password. An email link opens your account, so whoever reads your inbox can sign in with a basic session. Protect your email account with all the tools that your provider offers.
  • Add a strong method: a passkey or the Mnemonica app proves that you are you, with the way you unlock your device. Add one, and we recommend two. See Signing in to Mnemonica.
  • Never give a code to anybody: Mnemonica never asks you for a one-time code. If somebody asks, say no.
  • Protect your computer user account: your user account on the computer gives access to all your data. Lock it, and unlock it with your fingerprint, your face or a PIN that nobody can guess. Turn on Find My Mac or Find My Device: if you lose the computer, you can lock or erase it from another device.
  • Use one account on all your devices: use the same Apple ID or Google account on all your devices. Each additional account is one more thing that an attacker can attack. With one account, your passkeys sync to all your devices.
  • Do not trust unknown links: do not open links or attachments from unknown senders, in text messages, messaging apps or emails. Use antivirus and anti-malware apps. Do not visit websites or install apps that you do not trust.
  • Read the messages on your screen: good services tell you when something changes on your account. Read these messages before you click.

Protect your smartphone

Your smartphone is a key to Mnemonica. If you lose it, remove it from your account: see Lost device and reset. To protect your phone:

  • Keep the operating system and the apps up to date.
  • Lock your phone with a PIN. The Mnemonica app uses it if your phone has no fingerprint or face sensor.
  • Unlock your phone with your fingerprint or your face: Touch ID, Face ID or the equivalent on Android.
  • Turn on two-step verification on the accounts on your phone, when the service offers it.
  • Keep your mobile phone number private.
  • Back up your data, in the cloud or on a computer.
  • Do not jailbreak or root your phone.
  • Do not use public charging stations. Use a power bank.
  • Do not use public Wi-Fi networks.

If you protect your accounts and devices, it is much more difficult for an attacker to steal your identity, your data or your money.
