Updated

Your team uses Mnemonica 3, and version 3.5 is about to arrive. Version 3.5 changes how you sign in to Mnemonica. This guide tells you what to do, in order, on the day of the release. Each step links to the full article in the guide.

What changes

Earlier versions of the Mnemonica app and of the Gate do not work with 3.5. Update both before you start.

  • No more passwords and no more MFA. You sign in with an email link, Google or Apple (a basic session), or with a passkey or the Mnemonica app (a strong session).
  • Strong Projects open only in a strong session. The Projects that required MFA become Strong Projects. You can use all other Projects in a basic session too.
  • The Mnemonica app becomes the key to your account. With the app, each person can make their sessions on any other device strong.
  • The Gate updates by itself and pairing is simpler, but pairing needs a strong session in the browser.

To learn more about the difference, read Basic and strong sessions and Strong Projects.

1. Install the app and make it strong

If you already have the app, update it from the store before you sign in.

  1. Install the Mnemonica app from the App Store (iOS 15 or later) or from Google Play (Android 7 or later). Details: Mnemonica Mobile App.
  2. Open the app. Sign in with an email link, Google or Apple. The session is basic.
  3. When you open a Strong Project or Preferences / Security, the app shows Enable biometrics. Tap it.
  4. Confirm with the fingerprint, face or PIN of your phone.

The session is strong immediately. If your phone has no sensor and no PIN, you cannot enable biometrics, and your sessions stay basic.

2. Do the onboarding

The onboarding repeats the registration of a new account. It takes about one minute. Your account already exists, so you start from a sign-in link, not from a Join Mnemonica invitation.

  1. Go to mnemonica.io. Type your email address and click Send me a sign-in link.
  2. Open the email on the device that you want to use. Click the sign-in link. It works one time, for 15 minutes.
  3. Read and accept the Terms of Use and the Privacy Notice.
  4. Select how you want to sign in: email, Google or Apple.
  5. Check your display name. If you want, add a picture.
  6. Protect your account with a strong method.
  7. Recommended: add a second strong method, for example a passkey on a computer that only you use. If you lose one method, the other one prevents a reset.

3. Update the Gate and pair it

A Gate that is not updated does not work with 3.5. Update it before you continue.

The Gate updates by itself: you do not need to install it again. It checks for updates every hour. It installs them when it is idle or when it restarts. To update it now, click Check for updates in the General tab of the Preferences. You can also select Install new version in the menu of the options button (⋮). Versions earlier than 4.0.0 are deprecated: update or remove them.

Then pair the Gate with your browser. You need a strong session for this.

  1. In the web app, click the Gate icon in the top bar. Select Pair Gate....
  2. Copy the 6-digit code. It is valid for 2 minutes.
  3. In the Gate, paste the code in Pairing code. Click Authorize.
  4. When the Gate icon in the top bar turns green, the Gate is paired.

4. Make your other sessions strong

Each device, and each browser, has its own session. A basic session cannot become strong by itself: a strong device must approve the new one.

On a shared computer, never save a passkey. Scan the QR code each time and answer No, others use it too.

5. If you lose your only strong session

If you still have another strong device, you do not need a reset. Sign in with that device. Then remove the lost device in Preferences / Security: the Passkeys tab for a computer, the API keys and devices tab for a phone.

If you have no strong device left, do a reset.

The reset deletes all your passkeys, app keys and API keys. It disconnects Google and Apple, and it ends your sessions on all other devices. You cannot undo it.

  1. Sign in with an email link, Google or Apple. The session is basic.
  2. Open Preferences / Security. In the Sessions and reset tab, click Reset sign-in methods.
  3. Wait 24 hours. During this time you can work only in basic sessions. Strong Projects stay closed, and you cannot add a strong method.
  4. After 24 hours, add a new strong method. It is active immediately.
  5. Pair your Gates again.

Also know this:

  • Only you get the notice of the reset, by email and as a notification on the phone with the app.
  • You can do one reset every 7 days.

For Company Administrators

  • Ask each person in your team to install the app and enable biometrics. It is the easiest way to have strong sessions on every device.
  • You turn the strong-session requirement on or off for each Project, with the Require a strong session switch. Only Company Administrators can change it, in a strong session. See Strong Projects.
  • An account that several people share can use only basic sessions. For Strong Projects, each person needs their own account.
