During a shoot, the same dailies go to many people every day: the director, the producers, the editorial department, the studio. Each Audience needs its own watermark, and some must not see all the takes. In Mnemonica, you configure this once: a Master Room that holds the content, and one Alias Room for each Audience. After that, each day of shooting costs you one upload and a few clicks.

How it works

An Alias Room is a mirror of a Master Room. It always shows the content of the Master Room, and Mnemonica does not duplicate the files. Each Alias Room has its own Audience, its own watermark and its own enabled Days.

So you upload the dailies to the Master Room only. Then you decide, Day by Day, which Rooms show them. Each Guest sees only the enabled Days of their Room, with the watermark of that Room.

Prepare the Rooms

Do this once, at the start of the Production.

Create the Master Room

Create a Dailies Room. This is the Master Room: you upload all the dailies here.

Make one Alias Room for each Audience

On the card of the Master Room, click the options button (⋮). Choose Make alias.... Type a name that identifies the Audience, for example "Studio". Click Make Alias.

Set the watermark of each Alias Room

On the card of the Alias Room, click the options button (⋮). Choose Watermark..., then Burned-in Watermark... or Overlay Watermark.... A watermark can identify a group or one single Guest.

Invite the Audience of each Alias Room

Go to Guests, open the Screening Rooms tab and select the Alias Room. Add Guests or Groups to its Audience.

Repeat the last three steps for each Audience. If one person must see fewer Days than the others, make a separate Alias Room for that person.

Publish the dailies of each day

The dailies operator does this every day of shooting, in the Master Room.

Create the new Days

In the Days column, click the add button (+) to create a Day. Create one Day for each part of the shooting day. Content for different Audiences goes in separate Days.

For example, put the circled takes in one Day and the restricted content in another Day.

Create the Bins

Create one Bin for each scene. Add the metadata of the scene.

Upload the media

Upload the media into the Days and Bins.

Check the content

A new Day is disabled in the Alias Rooms, so their Guests do not see it while you upload. Check the media before you enable the Day.

Enable each Day in the correct Rooms

In the Master Room, click the options button (⋮) on the Day. Choose Enable..., then choose where the Day appears:

  • In this Room: the Master Room only.
  • In related Aliases: all the Alias Rooms of the Master Room.
  • In this Room + Aliases: the Master Room and all its Alias Rooms.

The menu shows only the choices that change something. If the Day is already enabled in the Master Room, you see only In related Aliases. A Collaborative Master Room is always enabled, so its menu also shows only In related Aliases.

To show a Day in one Alias Room only, open that Alias Room. Click the options button (⋮) on the Day and choose Enable. A green arc on the Day means enabled, a red arc means disabled.

To remove a Day from the Alias Rooms, use Disable... in the same way.

You do not need to tell the Guests. Every two hours, Mnemonica checks the Rooms for new content and sends a New content available notification to their Audiences.

When the dailies operator is not a Team Member

For content privacy, you may not want to give the DIT, the data manager or the dailies operator access to the whole Project. In this case, make the Master Room a Collaborative Room:

  1. Create the Master Room as a Collaborative Dailies Room.
  2. Invite the dailies operator to the Master Room as a Guest. In a Collaborative Room, a Guest has full control of the media, Days and Bins.
  3. Invite all the viewing Audiences to the Alias Rooms, never to the Master Room.

The dailies operator then publishes the dailies every day as described above, without access to the other Rooms of the Project.

The one-upload workflow

If the Collaborative Master Room has the Keep originals switch on, the dailies operator can upload ProRes or DNxHD files. Mnemonica keeps the original files and makes streaming proxies for the Alias Rooms. The editorial department downloads the original files from the Master Room.

One upload then serves two purposes: the dailies for every Audience, and the files for the edit.

If you keep the original files, the size of the Project can increase dramatically. Purge the originals when the editorial department has downloaded them.

Share a selection outside the dailies

To show only some clips to one person, without a new Alias Room, copy the clips from the Media Pool. Then paste them on the Rooms page to create a new Room. See Copying and pasting.
