You watch a cut, a sound mix or a still, and you want to tell the team what to change. In a Screening Room, you comment on the media itself, on the Player page. On a video, a comment can point to one frame: the people who read it then see exactly the moment that you mean. You can also draw on the frame to show the detail.

Who can comment

The Comments access setting of the Room controls who can comment:

  • Public: Team Members and Guests can comment.
  • Private: only Guests can comment.
  • Disabled: nobody can comment.

The person who creates the Room chooses Comments access. Nobody can change it later.

Comment on a frame

On a video clip, a comment can refer to one frame. Use the comment bar under the player.

Check the stopwatch

Make sure that the stopwatch on the left of the comment bar is on. If the bar shows Entire clip, click the stopwatch. The bar then shows the position of the player.

Go to the frame

Play or browse the video to the frame that you want to comment on.

To go to an exact frame, click the position in the comment bar. Type the timecode. Press Enter.

Type the comment

Click the Comment… field. Type your message.

Draw on the frame

This step is optional. To show a detail, draw on the frame. See Draw on a frame or a picture.

Post the comment

Click the send button (the paper plane) on the right. A gray dot shows above the timeline at that position.

To comment on the whole clip and not on one frame, turn off the stopwatch before you post. The bar then shows Entire clip.

Show frame numbers

The comment bar shows the position as a timecode. To show the frame number, click the arrow next to the position. Then select Frame #. The bar shows the current frame and the total, for example 286 / 431. To go back, select Timecode.

Pause the video while you type

When the pause button under the comment bar (Pause while typing) is on, the video pauses while you type. To keep the video playing, turn it off.

Draw on a frame or a picture

You can draw on a frame or a picture when you post a new thread.

  1. Click the brush button under the comment bar (Draw on frame). The drawing tools open.
  2. Select a shape: Line, Rectangle, Ellipse or Arrow.
  3. Select a color.
  4. Select a stroke width. Each click on the stroke width button (1X) changes the stroke width.
  5. Draw on the frame or the picture.
  6. To change a shape, click Select. Then click the shape.
  7. To remove a shape before you post, click Select. Click the shape. Then click Delete selected shape. To remove all the shapes, click Clear all drawings.

While the drawing tools are open, you cannot type a timecode in the comment bar.

You cannot draw in a reply. You cannot delete only the drawing after you post it. To remove it, delete its comment.

Threads and replies

A comment has two levels:

  • A thread is the main comment. You can post as many threads as you need.
  • A reply answers a thread. If the thread refers to a timecode, all its replies refer to the same timecode.

To edit or delete your comment, open the comments feed tab. Point at the comment. Click the pencil icon to edit it, or the trash icon to delete it.

Move between comments

On a video clip, you can move between comments in three ways:

  • Click a comment in the comments feed tab. The player goes to its timecode.
  • Click a gray dot above the timeline. A preview of the thread opens, and the comments feed goes to it. If threads overlap, the preview shows a list: select a thread.
  • Use the keyboard shortcuts G and H.

Depending on the length of the media, one dot can represent more than one thread.

Who gets notified

When someone posts a new thread, Mnemonica notifies the entire audience of the Room. When someone replies to a thread, Mnemonica notifies only the author of the thread and the other people who replied.

To export all the comments of a Room, read Export comments feed.
